Anyone who has used power tools for a while knows they can be potentially dangerous. The wattages of modern power saws, hammer drills, electric planers, drop saws and the likes have increased and these tools can do serious damage to their users if care is not taken. By no means an exhaustive list, here are a few safety tips to consider when using power tools:

  1. water and electricity do not mix – water and power can be a lethal combination so take extreme care when using power tools in wet conditions or near any open expanses of water
  2. always wear safety goggles when drilling, using power saws, jigsaws or virtually ANY power tool
  3. protect your ears too. Power tools can make a lot of noise and a lot of the noise created is often high frequency noise that can damage the ears. A pair of ear muffs is not expensive and can protect against long term ear damage
  4. learn how to use a power tool. Incorrect use of power tools can lead to injuries. You can find a lot of video’s on youtube and the internet that clearly explain the safe way to use power tools.

  8. be wary of buying second hand power tools that may have developed electrical faults
